Description

Stapled hemorrhoidopexy, also known as stapled hemorrhoidectomy, is a surgical procedure used to treat hemorrhoidsIt involves using a circular stapling device to excise a ring of tissue from the anal canal, effectively lifting and repositioning the prolapsed hemorrhoids and reducing blood flow to the area. The procedure is typically performed for grade III and IV hemorrhoids, or for grade II cases with significant bleeding.

Procedure:
  • The procedure is usually performed under spinal anesthesia.

  • A circular stapler is inserted into the anal canal.

  • A ring of mucosal and submucosal tissue is excised using the stapler.

  • The stapled tissue is closed, creating an anastomosis (connection) and lifting the hemorrhoids.

  • This action also cuts off the blood supply to the hemorrhoids, causing them to shrink.

Benefits:
  • Reduced Postoperative Pain: Patients generally experience less pain compared to traditional hemorrhoidectomy.

  • Faster Recovery: The procedure is associated with a shorter recovery time.

  • Lower Morbidity: Stapled hemorrhoidopexy has been shown to have a lower rate of complications compared to conventional surgical techniques.

  • Improved Symptom Control: It can effectively manage symptoms like prolapse and bleeding.

  • Reduced Incontinence Risk: Some studies suggest a lower risk of incontinence compared to other methods.

Important Considerations:
  • Not a New Technique:

While initially introduced in 1997, stapled hemorrhoidopexy has become a widely accepted treatment for prolapsed internal hemorrhoids.

  • Potential Complications:

While generally safe, potential complications include bleeding, stenosis (narrowing of the anal canal), and recurrence of hemorrhoids.

  • Individualized Approach:
The suitability of stapled hemorrhoidopexy should be determined by a healthcare professional based on the individual’s specific condition and symptoms.
